AppIt!

An iOS browser and app launcher that transforms websites into focused, native-feeling iOS applications with userscript customization support.

Overview

AppIt! reimagines how you interact with the web on iOS. Instead of the traditional tab-based browser experience, AppIt organizes websites as individual "applings" which are focused, persistent destinations that feel more like native apps than browser tabs. You can think of applings like browser tabs but for your home screen.

The Problem / Why

The modern web is powerful, but traditional browsers bury websites under endless tab management:

  • Tabs pile up and important sites get lost
  • No clear sense of place: everything feels temporary
  • Daily tools and services lack the polished experience of native apps
  • Power workflows require constant context switching

and most apps are actually just websites anyway...

The Solution / How

AppIt shifts from tabs to persistent destinations. Each website you care about gets its own focused space:

Install as Appling

  • Visit any website and tap Install to convert it into a first-class appling
  • Applings appear in a clean, organized launcher instead of a tab bar
  • Each has its own isolated browsing context

Home Screen Integration

  • Create launcher icons in Safari for direct hand-off into AppIt
  • Add to Home Screen in seconds for true app-like access
  • Tap once to jump directly into the right appling
  • Feels closer to native apps than traditional browsing

Focused Experience

  • No endless tabs to manage
  • Each appling maintains its own state and history
  • Cleaner interface designed around launched destinations
  • Better emotional connection to daily tools

Power User Features

Custom Userscripts

  • Run custom JavaScript across any appling
  • Patch awkward workflows with automation
  • Add UI fixes and tweaks right in the browser
  • Make web apps behave exactly how you want

Automation & Integration

  • Extend functionality without waiting for website updates
  • Share userscripts across team members
  • Build personal productivity tools on top of web services

Technical Approach

Architecture

  • iOS-first design philosophy
  • WebKit-based rendering with custom UI layer
  • Isolated browsing contexts per appling
  • Home Screen deep-linking support

Integration Points

  • Safari sharing extension for easy appling creation
  • URLSchemes for direct launching and navigation
  • Persistent state management per appling
  • Userscript engine with DOM manipulation API

Impact

AppIt transforms the relationship between users and web applications:

  • Reduces cognitive load from tab management
  • Makes daily web tools feel more permanent and valuable
  • Empowers power users with customization without coding
  • Bridges the gap between web apps and native experiences

The platform rethinks browser UX by acknowledging that not all websites are equal-some deserve to be treated as core tools rather than temporary tabs.
